The UK is one of the world’s top chemical-producing nations, with a high-performance industry achieving outstanding levels of growth, exports, productivity performance and international investment.
The chemical industry is also a significant provider of jobs and creator of wealth for the UK. It is one of the largest manufacturing industries in the UK, with a turnover of £60 billion. Every day for the past decade the sector has added £20 million to the UK balance of trade.
The sector provides direct employment for 214,000 people and supports several hundred thousand additional jobs throughout the economy. The chemical industry is very efficient, delivering a value added per employee of nearly twice that of the UK manufacturing average.
